The Origin and Myth Behind the Name "Annur"
The name Annur is believed to have evolved from the ancient term "Vanniyur", which later became "Anniyur" before transforming into its current form. Over 1,000 years ago, a fascinating event is said to have occurred in Annur. According to local mythology, a hunter struck a stone beneath a Vanni tree, and to his astonishment, the stone began to bleed. Alarmed and intrigued, he called the villagers to investigate. The villagers soon discovered that the stone was a "Suyambu" Lord Shiva idol—a naturally formed deity. Recognizing its divine significance, they built the Manneeshwarar Temple at the site, which remains a sacred place of worship to this day. This legend not only gives Annur its historical and spiritual significance but also connects its name to the divine roots of the region, attracting devotees and history enthusiasts alike.
