The name Annur is believed to have evolved from the ancient term "Vanniyur", which later became "Anniyur" before transforming into its current form. Over 1,000 years ago, a fascinating event is said to have occurred in Annur. According to local mythology, a hunter struck a stone beneath a Vanni tree, and to his astonishment, the stone began to bleed. Alarmed and intrigued, he called the villagers to investigate. The villagers soon discovered that the stone was a "Suyambu" Lord Shiva idol—a naturally formed deity. Recognizing its divine significance, they built the Manneeshwarar Temple at the site, which remains a sacred place of worship to this day.
